The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federal grant program, administered by the Department of Health and Human Services, that provides financial assistance to low-income individuals and families to cover energy bills, as well as weatherization and minor home repairs. This critical program protects households that might otherwise be forced to choose between heating their homes and buying groceries or seeking healthcare. In FY 2019, 5.3 million households received money for heating assistance through LIHEAP.
APGA members work hard to keep rates affordable for their customers, but many still rely on LIHEAP to pay their bills. APGA is a staunch advocate for LIHEAP funding.
