This recruitment will be used to fill one vacancy at either the Gas Engineering Technician Trainee or Gas Engineering Technician level.
First review of applications will be on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, and weekly thereafter as needed.
Gas Engineering Technician Trainee ($41,725.01 - $59,928.34 annually)
Under close supervision, progressing to general supervision, learns to perform skilled, technical, and paraprofessional gas engineering work; and performs related work as required. This is a trainee class in which the employee learns to perform the full scope of duties of a Gas Engineering Technician through an on-the-job training program. An employee of this class is trained in assignments involving the application of gas system engineering knowledge and City of Mesa policies. Training and close supervision is provided by the Senior Gas Engineer or Gas Engineer. As training progresses, the incumbent is expected to exercise semi-independent to independent judgment in selecting work methods. The Gas Engineering Technician Trainee can progress by noncompetitive, criteria-based promotion to Gas Engineering Technician after successfully completing the on-the-job training program, achieving satisfactory performance appraisals, and meeting the minimum qualifications of the Gas Engineering Technician class. This class is FLSA nonexempt.
Gas Engineering Technician ($53,244.88 - $76,472.86 annually)
Under general supervision, performs skilled, technical, and paraprofessional gas engineering work; and performs related work as required. Employees of this class perform skilled technical gas engineering that includes the reading, understanding, and review of engineering construction plans, civil plans, and permit or building plans. This position will also research the gas system infrastructure in Mesa to determine the needs of gas customers. Employees in this position will have extensive public contact to guide city customers through the process and procedures of obtaining gas services, State and Federal regulations, and public work requirements. This position shall have building code knowledge and an understanding of gas distribution systems. Assignments involve the application of gas system engineering knowledge and City of Mesa policies; however, employees of this class are expected to exercise independent judgment in selecting work methods. This class is distinguished from the Senior Gas Engineering Technician by the lead supervisory responsibilities of the latter. This class is distinguished from the Gas Engineering Technician Trainee by its responsibility for the full performance of paraprofessional gas engineering work. Supervision is received from the Senior Gas Engineer, or Gas Engineer who reviews work for conformance to sound gas system engineering practices. Employees may progress to this class by noncompetitive promotion upon meeting the specific criteria-based promotion requirements. This class is FLSA nonexempt.

Gas Engineering Technician Trainee:
Minimum Qualifications Required. Graduation from high school or GED. One year of technician experience (examples: Permit Technician, Engineering Assistant Technician, Auto Computer-Aided Drafting [CAD] Technician, or related field); paraprofessional civil or gas engineering experience (example: civil drafting); design and permit plan review experience; or public contact with municipal customers, contractors, and consultants experience.
Special Requirements. Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver’s License by hire date.
Preferred/Desirable Qualifications. Coursework or formal training in geometry, trigonometry, AutoCAD, civil or gas engineering is preferred. Paraprofessional work experience in gas, survey, and/or global positioning systems (GPS) is highly desirable. Civil engineering experience involving the interpretation of architectural and civil engineering plans is highly desirable.
Gas Engineering Technician:
Minimum Qualifications Required. Graduation from high school or GED. Considerable (3 - 5 years) of technician experience (examples: Permit Technician, Engineering Assistant Technician, Auto Computer-Aided Drafting [CAD] Technician, or related field); or paraprofessional civil or gas engineering experience (example: civil drafting).
Special Requirements. Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver’s License by hire date.
Preferred/Desirable Qualifications. Supplemental coursework in Civil Engineering, Construction Technology, or related courses is highly desirable.
