Job Statement: Under direction of the Corrosion Supervisor, the Corrosion Tech I maintain and monitors cathodic protection of the natural gas system and collects and records field data required to meet the Department of Transportation’s pipeline safety guidelines. Assists in the troubleshooting of any potential interferences within the cathodic protection system and assists in the installation and repair of corrosion control equipment and materials.

Essential Duties:
1. Inspects rectifier and anode corrosion protection systems to minimize corrosive effects of discharge between gas pipelines and ground and other structures.
2. Measures direct electric current present in ground using voltmeter, amp meter, and resistivity meter.
3. Identifies, records, and reports pipe-to-soil readings that fall below standard as required by the Department of Transportation’s Office of Pipeline Safety.
4. Assists with the installation of flange or pipe insulators to isolate sections of pipe protected by rectifier or anode systems.
5. Utilizes electronic devices and technical skills to locate underground electrical shorts in the cathodic protection system.
6. Assists construction crews in clearing electrical shorts within the gas system.
7. Performs periodic natural gas line locates for site excavation.
8. Troubleshoots and maintains rectifier systems.
9. Takes and records readings from rectifiers and test stations.

10. Installs sacrificial anodes on unprotected or inadequately protected pipelines.
11. Promotes company good will by interacting with customers in a professional manner.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education/Training/Certifications: High school diploma or equivalent required; degree or certificate in electrical/electronic technology from technical/trade school desired (military training acceptable). Successful completion of basic corrosion course and exam from approved training facilitator within 24 months of hire required. N.A.C.E Corrosion Technician License preferred.

Experience/Skills: Minimum of one (1) year Cathodic Protection experience required or Graduation from HU Gas Apprenticeship program or approved DOL regulated Natural Gas Apprenticeship Program.

Equipment: Voltmeter, amp meter, resistivity meter, cathodic protection devices, Pipehorn and Nilsson pipeline locators. Ability to operate a backhoe is a plus. Utilize computer to access mapping applications (such as Field View and G Tech).

Physical Demands/Environmental Conditions: Exposure to extreme weather conditions and blowing gas.
Other: Valid driver’s license, ability to obtain Class A CDL within year of hire date, and a clean driving record.
