Since 1955, the Sevier County Utility District (S·C·U·D) has been committed to providing natural gas to residents and businesses of Sevier County and parts of Blount County. Here at S·C·U·D, it is our mission to provide an economical and reliable source of natural gas to our customers in a manner that is safe and environmentally responsible. We currently serve more than 15,000 natural gas customers and operate ~667 miles of distribution PE main and ~42 miles of distribution steel main. We have grown tremendously over the past few years and now have 92 full-time employees, including our S·C·U·D Homestore division that sells and installs natural gas appliances and performs gas plumbing installation after the meter. S·C·U·D is an active member of the Tennessee Gas Association and the American Public Gas Association.

Sevier County, Tennessee is known as the “Gateway” to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in the country with over 10 million visitors each year. It is also home to ~99,000 residents. Located off of exit 407 of Interstate 40, Sevier County, TN is comprised of the three most popular cities in the state – Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and Sevierville. Visitors flock to Sevier County each year to enjoy great shopping, world-class theme parks, theaters and live entertainment, local festivals and events, or just relax with family in a mountain cabin. Sevier County weather is seasonable year around, but we do have the pleasure of enjoying four distinct, yet mild, seasons. The Smokies of East Tennessee put on quite a show each spring and fall, with thousands of tourists visiting just to watch the flowers bloom and the leaves change color!



The Chief Engineer is responsible for directing, supervising, and coordinating the day-to-day activities and technical work of the engineering department. Our engineering department is currently comprised of six (6) engineering technicians that perform various engineering duties including: GPS surveying, ESRI GIS mapping, creating construction drawings, performing project feasibility analysis, project planning and management, construction inspections, record keeping, technical support, SCADA system monitoring and maintenance, etc. The Director must engage, communicate, and collaborate with the supervisors and crews involved in various areas of construction, inspection, maintenance, and compliance. The Director reports to the VP of Engineering and Operations.


The Chief Engineer’s work activities will include:

  • The technical engineering design work, project management, project permitting, and safe implementation of natural gas projects.
  • Oversee and assist with the design and layout of natural gas lines utilizing Auto-CAD and/or ESRI for construction drawings and permit drawings.
  • Oversee and assist with mapping gas mains in ESRI/GIS and maintaining a database containing project information.
  • Ensure the proper and accurate maintenance of code compliance records in accordance with CFR 49 – 192 including all operations and maintenance records.
  • Attend meetings when necessary, with local governmental officials, other utilities, engineers, and developers to coordinate the engineering and planning of gas main installations.
  • Interact with individuals from the city, county, state, federal and other jurisdictions in an effort to provide and receive information and achieve common goals.
  • Meet with construction supervisors and the marketing department to plan future projects and/or review the status of existing projects.
  • Respond to public inquiries pertaining to the use and distribution of natural gas provided by the utility district.
  • Prepare and revise construction specifications, contract documents, easement documents, and various permitting applications.
  • Prepare engineering plans and specifications when required to bids projects.
  • Oversee and assist with performing feasibility analyses, preparing the annual capital budget, and developing a three-year master plan for natural gas main and rehabilitation projects.
  • Performs related duties as required. Job related duties require thorough knowledge of natural gas distribution and supply operations, strong organizational, interpersonal, analytical, and decision-making skills.



  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other related engineering field from an ABET accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of five (5+) years of experience in the natural gas industry in engineering, planning, project management, operations, and/or construction.



  • Possess and maintain a valid Tennessee driver’s license (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) and the ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.


  • Thorough knowledge of natural gas installation, construction, and maintenance practices, principles, and methods.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with natural gas operations including all applicable OSHA regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of Computer Aided Design (CAD) applications utilized for construction and permitting graphics and drawings.
  • Thorough knowledge of computerized mapping applications including the use of ESRI and GIS data.
  • Thorough knowledge of required code compliance records as mandated by CFR 49-192.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering practices and methods as applied to natural gas installation and distribution operations.
  • Thorough knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to the installation and distribution of natural gas including existing best practices.
  • Knowledge of the proper use and maintenance of SCADA computers and related equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, city and county officials, and co-workers.
