Position Summary
The Entry-Level Natural Gas Technician performs skilled field and shop work in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of the municipal natural gas distribution system. This role assists senior technicians in ensuring safe, reliable delivery of natural gas to residential, commercial, and industrial customers in compliance with federal (49 CFR Part 192), state (FPSC rules), and local regulations, as well as department policies and procedures. This position serves as a foundational role designed to develop knowledge, skills, and qualifications for future advancement.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, and repair natural gas mains, services, and related appurtenances under supervision.
- Perform line locating and marking in response to Sunshine 811 tickets.
- Assist with new service installations, meter sets, regulator station maintenance, and system tie-ins.
- Conduct or assist with leak surveys, pipeline patrols, cathodic protection, and odorant checks.
- Perform routine and emergency maintenance on valves, meters, and pressure-control equipment.
- Read, change out, and test meters and regulators; conduct basic pressure and flow checks.
- Operate or assist with operating tools and equipment used in gas construction and maintenance.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Participate in on-call rotation after achieving competency.
- Follow safety rules, procedures, and training requirements.
- Assist contractors, departments, and the public with information related to gas facilities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Prior natural gas experience preferred but not required; related construction/mechanical experience desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Basic knowledge of construction practices and mechanical tools; willingness to learn.
- Ability to read maps, plans, and work orders with guidance.
- Strong commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
- Effective communication skills.
- Ability to obtain Operator Qualifications for assigned tasks.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Primarily outdoor work with exposure to weather, traffic, and construction hazards.
- Frequent physical activity including lifting 50–75 lbs, bending, kneeling, climbing.
- Must wear required PPE including FR clothing, hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection.
- Must respond to emergency calls and work extended hours when required.
Special Requirements
- Must possess a Florida driver’s license and pass a physical exam, drug/alcohol screening, and background check.
- Participation in ongoing random drug/alcohol testing program.
