The SCADA Technician / Reserve Gas Controller position at York County Natural Gas Authority (YCNGA) / Patriots Energy Group (PEG) in Rock Hill, SC, offers an exciting opportunity for a skilled technician with experience in SCADA systems and gas control operations. This dual-role position combines technical responsibilities in SCADA systems with operational tasks as a Reserve Gas Controller. This role will involve ensuring the reliable performance of SCADA systems while also ensuring safe and efficient operation of the gas pipeline systems.
Position Title: SCADA Technician
Job Summary:
The SCADA Technician is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of SCADA systems that support gas control operations. This role ensures the SCADA infrastructure is functioning optimally and addresses any system anomalies, while assisting in the integration of new technologies and system upgrades.
Key Responsibilities:
- SCADA System Maintenance:
- Perform routine maintenance on SCADA systems, including troubleshooting hardware and software components.
- Ensure availability and reliability of SCADA systems, sensors, controllers, and communication networks.
- System Monitoring and Analysis:
- Continuously monitor SCADA data to identify issues, system irregularities, and performance anomalies in real-time.
- Investigate and analyze data trends to proactively address problems.
- Troubleshooting and Repairs:
- Diagnose and resolve issues with SCADA equipment and communication networks.
- Respond promptly to system failures and malfunctions to minimize downtime.
- Integration & Upgrades:
- Support the integration of new equipment, technologies, and software.
- Assist with system upgrades, patches, and version control.
- Data Logging & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate logs of system performance, alarms, repairs, and system activities.
- Provide regular reports on system status and maintenance activities.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with field technicians, engineers, and operations teams to ensure smooth SCADA operations.
- Assist in implementing best practices for SCADA operations.
- Emergency Response:
- Respond to emergency situations, including system outages, and restore operations safely.
- Collaborate with other departments during emergencies to resolve issues quickly.
- Compliance:
- Ensure SCADA operations meet regulatory and company standards.
- Maintain and manage service agreements for Gas Control Operations.
Position Title: Reserve Gas Controller
Job Summary:
The Reserve Gas Controller is responsible for monitoring and controlling gas pipeline systems, ensuring safe and efficient gas flow, and responding to emergencies. This role is critical to maintaining system integrity and ensuring gas transmission and distribution pipelines operate safely and reliably.
Key Responsibilities:
- System Operation and Control:
- Fill in for Gas Controllers during PTO or other absences.
- Monitor and control gas pipeline systems, including control valves and compressors.
- Ensure safe and efficient gas flow through the system.
- Emergency Response and Coordination:
- Respond to emergency calls and dispatch personnel as needed.
- Handle after-hours emergency calls and coordinate with on-call personnel for resolution.
- System Monitoring and Data Management:
- Monitor system pressures, gas volumes, and adjust control settings via SCADA software.
- Compile daily operational reports and verify gas nominations.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work with the Meter and Regulation department to provide live data and communication support.
- Communicate system issues, alarms, and problems to relevant parties.
- Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
- Adhere to U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and PHMSA Control Room Management policies.
- Perform all duties in accordance with the values and policies of YCNGA.
- Optimization and System Reliability:
- Respond to alarms, making critical decisions to prevent or mitigate incidents.
- Optimize control settings to ensure pipeline efficiency and reliability.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain detailed records of system performance, activities, and daily control results.
- Adjust gas nominations as needed and communicate updates.
- Qualification and Certification:
- Maintain Operator Qualification (OQ) certification for gas control activities.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with certification schedules.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds occasionally, and up to 10 pounds frequently. The position requires vocal communication via telephones and two-way radios, manual dexterity, and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing data. It also requires the ability to work in an emergency relief call environment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of gas pipeline control, SCADA systems, and gas control operations.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work independently.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Ability to meet DOT Operator Qualification criteria.

Qualifications:
- Education & Experience:
- High School Diploma required, Associate Degree or technical training preferred.
- Experience with SCADA systems and gas control operations is preferred.
- Experience with troubleshooting and optimizing SCADA systems.
- Certifications & Skills:
- Relevant certifications in SCADA or gas control operations preferred.
- Ability to work independently, make decisions, and adhere to safety protocols.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Hourly Rate: $34.00 - $44.00 ($70,720 to $91,520)
- 401(k): 6% employer match + additional 8% employer contribution

Work Schedule:
- SCADA Technician: 8-hour shifts (8am to 5pm), or other arrangements.
- Reserve Gas Controller: Rotating 12-hour shifts (4 days, 4 on-call, 4 nights, 4 off).
Additional Requirements:
- Valid South Carolina driver’s license and clean driving record.
- DOT random drug testing required.
- Ability to commute or relocate to Rock Hill, SC.
