ICC Staff Published Model EV Code Language Outside of Established Process

Last week, the International Code Council (ICC) published an electric vehicle (EV) resource that included inappropriately developed model code language. While APGA and its members support the development of resources for cities and towns interested in exploring different routes to approach energy use and decarbonization, this deviation from its standard code development procedures is alarming.
The ICC Board recently approved an expansion of the International Energy Conservation Code’s (IECC) scope that would allow for such EV provisions to be added to the code, pending the review and approval of the IECC development committee. However, instead of using the existing code development procedure and despite
objections raised by APGA and others
, ICC staff decided to move ahead with publishing the model code language. In response to its release, APGA issued a press statement, which is available
here
.
Moving forward, APGA will continue to work with ICC, its code development committees, and staff in order to help facilitate robust and transparent conversations surrounding the development and promulgation of new model code provisions.
