APGA Letter Encourages FERC to Extend MVP Southgate Pipeline Certificate

Washington, D.C. (October 19, 2023) – Today, the American Public Gas Association (APGA), representing more than 730 local, municipally owned natural gas systems in 38 states, issued the following statement in response to select North Carolina General Assembly members urging FERC to deny an extension request for the Mountain Valley Pipeline Southgate. 

“Earlier today, the American Public Gas Association (APGA) submitted a letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) expressing concern about misleading information presented by more than fifty North Carolina General Assembly members challenging the certificate extension of the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) Southgate, which was based on misguided concerns about indoor air quality. Claims linking natural gas cooking to indoor air quality concerns lack conclusive evidence, as numerous studies have shown. Natural gas has been a safely and efficiently source of energy for decades. In fact, natural gas stoves are often preferred by home and professional chefs because of notable benefits including quick startup, even temperature control and reliability during power outages.

APGA urges the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to base critical decisions regarding infrastructure on substantiated facts rather than unfounded views that perpetuate a “one-size-fits-all” electrification viewpoint as it would be inconsistent with the Commission’s statutorily authorized purpose and authority.

The MVP Southgate expansion would boost economic growth and can provide relief to regional pipeline systems. Failing to expand the existing pipeline infrastructure denies consumers access to affordable, resilient, reliable and efficient energy. As such, APGA urges FERC and state policymakers to recognize the well-documented benefits of natural gas when developing policies affecting the lives of everyday Americans.”
