APGA was one of several organizations that signed on to a letter submitted to Congress. The National Safety Council (NSC) led an effort to highlight the importance of maintaining safety in critical operations, including that of public natural gas utilities, when considering changes to drug policy. The submission did not address legalization but highlighted to Congress concerns about the current and potential implications for workplace health and safety absent careful consideration of the proposed marijuana legislation. Specifically discussed was the lack of scientific definitions for impairment levels for marijuana. The drug testing protocols from the Department of Transportation (DOT) were mentioned in the letter, including pointing out possible confusion that could exist if proposed legislation does pass Congress. The hope with this letter is that representatives will better understand the impacts of safety in certain operations and hold hearings to learn more on every aspect if legalizing marijuana is pursued.
