APGA Weighs in on EPA’s Implementation of IRA Provisions (January 18 2023)

01-19-2023 10:58 AM

On January 18, APGA submitted comments in response to a request from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) pertaining to the Office of Air and Radiation’s (OAR) implementation of certain provisions from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

On August 16, 2022, President Biden signed the IRA, which appropriated almost $11 billion to EPA to implement several provisions pertaining primarily to emissions reductions and climate change. EPA’s request for comments included a range of topics, from pollution reduction grants to transportation programs to greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting.

APGA’s comments focused on the important role that public gas utilities, and the natural gas industry more broadly, have in helping meet our country’s emission reduction goals. The comments also specifically commented on the need for natural gas vehicles (NGVs) to be included in any transportation programs and that public gas utilities should be able to directly qualify for funding under the Methane Emissions and Waste Reduction Incentive Program. The comments also offered suggested guidance on how the agency should move forward with updating industry emissions reporting and bringing consistency to corporate GHG reporting.
