APGA Urges Congress to Remove Methane Fee

Washington, D.C. (October 27, 2021) – The American Public Gas Association (APGA), representing more than 700 municipally owned natural gas systems in 38 states, issued the following statement in response to the budget reconciliation bill.

“APGA urges Congress to remove the proposed methane fee included in the budget reconciliation bill. The fee will inevitably increase natural gas prices at a time when many families are already struggling to pay their bills.

Public gas systems are not-for-profit entities owned by their municipal or local government. Our members are accountable to the citizens they serve rather than shareholders. Our members’ primary focus is providing affordable, safe, and reliable energy to their families, friends, and neighbors.

As winter approaches, and American families prepare for a seasonal uptick in their energy bills, APGA urges Congress not to increase that burden by imposing a new tax on natural gas.”
