APGA Statement on Inauguration of President Trump

Washington, D.C. (January 21, 2025) – The American Public Gas Association (APGA), representing more than 730 communities across the U.S. that own and operate their retail natural gas distribution entities, issued the following statement upon the inauguration of President Trump:
 “APGA is ready to engage with the Trump Administration and we look forward to working with the new Administration, as well as the newly-elected Congress. Our work with them will be focused on ensuring that consumers have access to affordable and reliable natural gas.  Areas of priority for APGA over the next two years will include:
  • Collaborating with the new Administration to ensure that American consumers have the right to choose which energy source best fits their need and opposing proposals that limit access to natural gas appliances;
  • Protecting against the restriction of the full tax exemption for municipal bonds by recognizing the negative impacts that would result from a federal tax policy that reduces the financial power of local governments;
  • Recognizing the needs of energy consumers by passing legislation that allows for reasonable transportation rates for natural gas customers with the same protections from overcharges that is provided to electric consumers;
  • Ensuring that appliance efficiency standards provide significant energy savings to consumers without imposing an excessive cost burden on manufacturers or consumers and are based on sound science and data;
  •  Coordinating with the federal government to devise practical regulations to maintain the safety of our members’ pipeline systems while promoting the continued construction and maintenance of natural gas infrastructure with sensible permitting policies.

We congratulate the President and Vice President, and we remain committed to working with the Trump Administration to advance these advocacy priorities and achieve these critical energy goals.”

APGA is the national association of municipally and publicly-owned local distribution systems. There are about 1,000 public gas systems serving more than 6 million customers. These public gas utilities are not-for-profit retail distribution entities that are owned by, and accountable to, the citizens they serve. They include municipal gas distribution systems, public utility districts, county districts, and other public agencies that have natural gas distribution facilities.
