Washington, D.C. (December 1, 2023) – Today, the American Public Gas Association (APGA), representing more than 730 local, municipally owned gas systems in 38 states, issued the following statement in response to leaders in the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s introducing H.R. 6494, the Promoting Innovation in Pipeline Efficiency and Safety (PIPES) Act of 2023.
“APGA commends leaders in the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for their bipartisan efforts to introduce the ‘Promoting Innovation in Pipeline Efficiency and Safety (PIPES) Act of 2023.’ If passed, this legislation would reauthorize the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s (PHMSA) safety programs for the next four years, supporting the safety of US pipeline infrastructure.
APGA is hopeful that this positive, first step out of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee will ensure the appropriate conversation continues on pipeline safety policy. Practical legislation balances Americans' continued access to affordable energy while prioritizing the shared goal between industry and government of enhanced pipeline safety.
We encourage policymakers to continue supporting legislation effectively maintaining our nation’s resilient gas infrastructure to serve the nearly 187 million Americans and 5.8 million businesses who rely on it every day. On behalf of public gas utilities, we look forward to seeing its positive impact on our nation's pipeline network and are eager to support other committees of jurisdiction in Congress in their concurrent efforts."
