APGA Expresses Disappointment in DOE’s Changes to Appliance Efficiency Standards
Washington, D.C. (December 29, 2021) – The American Public Gas Association (APGA), representing more than 700 municipally and publicly owned natural gas systems in 38 states, issued the following statement in response to the Department of Energy’s (DOE) publication of its interpretive rule around efficiency standards for condensing and non-condensing appliances:
“The American Public Gas Association (APGA) is disappointed in the Administration’s decision to disregard the differences between condensing and non-condensing appliances and their need for separate product classes.
As with rules previously proposed by DOE, APGA has long maintained that requiring the replacement of non-condensing appliances with condensing appliances would ultimately undermine efficiency goals while significantly increasing home energy costs for consumers. DOE’s decision will result in efficiency standards that will burden consumers with high installation costs, require physical changes to homes and businesses and ultimately limit consumer choice with regards to fuel type.
APGA and its members are strong proponents of energy efficiency standards that are based on sound science, transparent analysis and economic justification — which in turn save Americans money and minimize emissions without eliminating consumer energy choice.”
