On January 20, Commissioner Mark Christie was appointed Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). APGA is excited to continue to work with Chairman Christie in this new role, and we look forward to collaborating on issues that are important to public gas utilities.

Chairman Christie’s new role will allow him to set the agenda. His leadership will be key in continuing to address crucial issues like permitting new natural gas infrastructure to meet increased demand.

Chairman Christie has stated that he will continue to prioritize three critical areas: protecting consumers from excessive power costs, addressing the dangerous pace of retirements of dispatchable generation units, and ensuring the construction of sufficient new generation. Additionally, Christie emphasized the importance of maintaining a close partnership between FERC and state regulators to effectively address these challenges. These priorities will be crucial for ensuring reliable and affordable energy, particularly for community-owned natural gas utilities.

Chairman Christie was confirmed as a FERC commissioner in 2020 during the first Trump administration and is serving a term that expires on June 30, 2025 (absent renomination). He replaces former Chairman Willie Phillips, who may continue to serve as a FERC commissioner until his term expires in 2026 (absent renomination).

We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to former Chairman Willie Phillips for his leadership during his tenure as chair at FERC.
