APGA Presents at GMA Gas Section/NGA Meeting

On October 1, APGA staff presented to members of the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) Gas Section and the Natural Gas Association of Georgia (NGA).  This year, for the first time, both organizations wanted to meet jointly to bring together industry professionals from both the municipal and investor-owned gas systems operating in Georgia and allow them to hear from invited speakers, like APGA. APGA staff shared the latest on legislation, regulation, and expectations, given the November elections are just weeks away.

Most of the audience members are integral parts of their utilities' operations efforts, so a lot of time was given to provide updates on regulations the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) is completing. The Gas Pipeline Leak Detection rule, as well as the Safety of Gas Distribution Pipelines rule were discussed. In addition to proposed pipeline safety rules, an update on the Furnace Rule was shared with audience members. Lastly, the group heard the latest on Congress’s efforts to reauthorize PHMSA’s Office of Pipeline Safety.

With each of these topics, there was robust discussion on how the presidential and congressional elections could be impactful. While it would be great, none at the meeting could predict the future, so no one knows for sure what will happen in November. It was still valuable to talk through the scenarios, though, as all Georgia gas utilities need to be prepared.

APGA always appreciates speaking to groups like the GMA Gas Section and NGA. Please contact staff if you are interested in having us speak.
