APGA Submits Comments to NIST

In late April, APGA submitted comments to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) responding to a Request for Information (RFI) to improve the Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity (CSF). Joining APGA in this feedback were a few other energy trade associations, which collectively represented all aspects of U.S. pipeline operations, including regional and local natural gas distribution pipelines, natural gas transmission pipelines, hazardous liquid pipelines, and municipal natural gas systems. This aggregate response shows the aligned position from an industry focused on providing energy to customers safely and reliably.

In the comments, the groups noted their continuous work, alongside NIST, to promote the adoption of the CSF. NIST is acting appropriately in reviewing the CSF periodically to ensure it is a broad, cross-sector framework that supports reducing cybersecurity risk to critical infrastructure. Natural gas and hazardous liquid pipeline operators believe the CSF is a valuable tool that is widely used. It is performance‐based, allowing for effective management of cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Energy pipeline companies need to have the latitude to balance safety and operational risks, as driven by an evolving threat landscape. This philosophy informed the general sentiment of the comments, which can be found here.
