APGA Pushes for Hydrogen R&D Legislation

Late last week, APGA joined with others in penning a letter to House Democrat and Republican leadership and House Energy and Commerce Committee leadership. This effort was organized by the Clean Hydrogen Future Coalition (CHFC), which is composed of diverse stakeholders with the shared vision to promote clean hydrogen as a pathway to achieve global decarbonization objectives, without negatively impacting U.S. global competitiveness. There are over 20 leading organizations in the coalition, including energy companies, labor unions, utilities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), equipment suppliers, and project developers, all committed to decreasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions using the existing American infrastructure.
In this specific outreach to Capitol Hill, CHFC members advocated for passing legislation that will promote a clean hydrogen economy. There are multiple benefits to undertaking research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) of clean hydrogen, including accelerating decarbonization across all sectors of the U.S. economy, as well as employing APGA members’ pipeline infrastructure and providing pathways for existing utility workers, not to mention creating new, high-paying jobs. Multiple domestic industries have identified clean hydrogen as a critical component of their strategy for achieving net-zero GHG emission targets, and they are looking to gas utilities to support these efforts. However, as this letter stressed, federal policy support is required to achieve a domestic clean hydrogen economy at scale.
