APGA Supports Michigan Energy Choice Legislation

Late last week, APGA voiced support for passing Michigan House Bill (HB) 4575. With that state’s legislature, organizations can email the clerk of the committee where the bill has been referred and indicate the position they would like to take. The email serves as a “card of support.” APGA did just that by engaging the clerk of the Regulatory Reform Committee to support Michigan’s version of legislation similar to others passed by various states, often referred to as “energy choice” or “ban-the-ban” bills. Learn more here. APGA staff felt it was important to weigh in and support this important legislation that protects consumer rights to natural gas. The bill is still being reviewed by the House Committee; but hopefully, APGA’s support and the support of others will prove to the legislators the need to pass this.

Even though there is only one public co-op in Michigan, it is still important to ensure states pass this type of legislation. It signifies to all elected officials that fuel choice should not be limited. At this point, quite a handful of state legislatures have passed, and governors have signed, these bills. Those states include:

  • Arizona
  • Tennessee
  • Oklahoma
  • Louisiana
  • Utah
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Kansas
  • Indiana
  • Georgia
