On March 4, APGA staff spoke to the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Gas Subcommittee. And on March 9, APGA staff also presented to the Council of Industrial Boiler Owners (CIBO). In both events, APGA was joined by representatives from the American Gas Association (AGA), the Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE), the Gas Technology Institute (GTI), and the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA). The subject of the conversations with NARUC and CIBO was the recently released BCSE Sustainable Factbook. APGA staff highlighted the important data within that report that shows what public natural gas utilities are doing to improve the efficiency of their systems. This year's BCSE Sustainable Factbook shows residential natural gas consumption decreased by 8 percent in 2020. However, the number of customers grew by 1 percent. Prior to 2020, the customer base for residential gas expanded by 5 million, or 8 percent, in the last decade, and by 12.1 million, or 21 percent, over the past 20 years. Efficiency is key in this residential consumption decrease while, over the same time customers grew. To see more on BCSE’s new report, click here.

APGA staff believes it is valuable to represent members at these events and before these natural gas value chain stakeholders and will continue to do so. Both groups are important and should know the value of the direct use of natural gas.
