On December 5, APGA hosted a webinar to educate members on the Residential International Energy Conservation Code (IECC-R), including its public draft that is currently out for comment. The webinar was co-hosted with the American Gas Association (AGA).
The IECC-R is the most adopted residential building code throughout the country. The development of the 2024 version is currently underway. During the webinar, members learned about the importance of the IECC-R, how it is adopted in different jurisdictions, which provisions in the public comment draft may impact public natural gas utilities, and how to navigate the comment submission website. APGA also discussed its intention to file comments to ensure there is fair and balanced treatment of all fuels when determining building energy performance.
The IECC-R is a code whose development is managed by the International Code Council (ICC). ICC manages the development of several building codes – referred to as the I-Codes, such as the International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC) and International Plumbing Code (IPC). Unlike other I-Codes, the IECC-R, starting this code cycle, is being developed in a standards development format, meaning that a 2/3 vote of a pre-selected consensus committee is the determining factor for new code provisions. The other I-Codes are all updated with an online vote of ICC governmental members, which include several APGA members.
Relevant recordings and slides from the will be made available to members shortly.
ICC is accepting public comments and new proposals on the IECC-R until 11:59 PM Pacific Time on Friday, December 16. All feedback must be submitted through
