Fuel Gas Detector Installation Standard Committee Meets to Discuss Draft Updates

Members from the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) 715 committee, which pertains to the installation of methane detectors in buildings, reconvened this week to discuss public input and other potential changes to the draft standard.  Meetings will continue through next week, and will impact issues, such as acceptable detection level thresholds of devices that can be compliant with the standard, among other things.

NFPA 715:  Standard for the Installation of Fuel Gases Detection and Warning Equipment was approved for an abbreviated development cycle.  The standard itself applies only to how such detectors should be installed; there is not yet any code or standard that requires their installation.  Pressure from other venues, including the National Transportation Safety Board, is a significant driver behind the development of the standard.  APGA staff are voting members on the NFPA 715 committee and have been actively working with the Codes & Standards Committee on issues pertaining to this new standard.

The second draft report is anticipated to be posted on January 25, 2022.  The new standard is not anticipated to be finalized until 2023.  More information is available online.
