On July 1, APGA submitted comments to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in response to its technical conference on electrification. Through the comments, APGA indicated its concerns with policy-driven electrification approaches, in addition to providing FERC with relevant electrification studies and requesting that natural gas stakeholders be included in related discussions moving forward.
On April 29, FERC convened a technical conference to discuss electrification and the grid of the future in order to “initiate a dialog between Commissioners and stakeholders on how to prepare for an increasingly electrified future.” Specifically, the conference addressed “projections, drivers, and risks of electrification in the United States; the extent to which electrification may influence or necessitate additional transmission and generation infrastructure; whether and how newly electrified sources of energy demand (e.g., electric vehicles, smart thermostats, etc.) could provide grid services and enhance reliability; and the role of state and federal coordination as electrification advances.”
Despite the interwoven nature of the electric and gas markets – and that the electrification policies the panelists discussed would have a direct impact on natural gas supply and use– the natural gas industry had no representation during the day-long technical conference.
