APGA Proposes to Reference Fuel Gas Detector Standard in NFGC

Earlier this week, APGA submitted two public input proposals to the 2024 edition of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 54, more commonly known as the National Fuel Gas Code (NFGC), that would add references to NFPA’s fuel gas detector installation standard (NFPA 715).

NFPA 715, the Standard for the Installation of Fuel Gases Detection and Warning Equipment, is a standard currently under development, with 2023 anticipated to be the first edition of the standard. Neither proposal would result in NFPA 715 becoming a requirement for those using the NFGC; they just make readers aware that the standard exists. The NFPA 54 proposals were born out of an NFPA 715 workgroup consensus and will be considered by the NFPA 54 committee later this year.

The National Transportation Safety Board recently issued its “Most Wanted” list, which advised regulators to require methane detection systems in residential occupancies with gas service, a recommendation resulting from the investigation into a 2018 Atmos Energy incident.
