APGA Provides Feedback on ASHRAE Standard 228 Draft

On May 17, APGA provided feedback on the public review draft of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standard 228: Standard Method for Evaluating Zero Net Energy and Zero Net Carbon Building Performance. As with other building codes and standards with which APGA engages, participation was critical to emphasize the importance of ensuring fair and balanced treatment of all energy sources when determining building energy and emissions performance.

Among other things, APGA’s comments noted that the proposed standard still failed to show the full picture when it comes to building energy performance. Additionally, APGA requested that additional options for offsetting carbon emissions be permitted in calculating a building’s net emissions, as opposed to only permitting the export of energy or purchase of off-site renewable energy to offset emissions. Continued engagement in venues such as ASHRAE will help ensure codes and standards will not force fuel switching from natural gas.

APGA will report on the outcome of the public review and any response to the comments when available.
