Kansas Senators Request Update on FERC’s February Natural Gas Price Spike Investigation

On April 16, the U.S. Senators from Kansas, Jerry Moran (R) and Roger Marshall (R), sent a letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) Chairman Richard Glick and the other commissioners, requesting an update of its investigation into market activity that resulted in historic wholesale natural gas price spikes during this past February’s severe winter weather events. Thus far, the status of FERC’s investigation is unknown.

Over Presidents Day weekend, wholesale natural gas prices increased by 100 to 300 times in several states in the central U.S. Amid the extreme cold, APGA members continued to serve their communities by purchasing increased quantities for deliveries at historic daily spot prices. Public natural gas systems were forced to purchase gas at inflated prices or pay steeper pipeline penalties. APGA remains a resource for members, and staff continues to explore potential avenues for relief to best support impacted communities.

The letter from the senators is available here or also on our website here.
