On March 1, APGA submitted joint comments with the American Gas Association (AGA) in response the Department of Energy’s (DOE) notice of proposed determination (NOPD) pertaining to standards for conventional consumer cooking products. Through the comments, the associations supported DOE’s tentative determinations that no new standards are required for any of the product classes, including gas-fired ovens and ranges, and asked DOE to finalize these determinations.
The APGA-AGA comment letter also supported the appropriate implementation of the updated Process Rule in DOE’s NOPD. Although not appliance manufacturers, APGA members do provide the energy needed to fuel gas-fired ovens and ranges; consequently, public natural gas utilities are a critical stakeholder in rulemakings such as this one. In other DOE news, in her first speech as Secretary of Energy, Jennifer Granholm indicated that gas and oil companies could be left behind if they do noy embrace a transition to cleaner energy and offered an opportunity to partner with the administration. Also, the Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources held a hearing to consider the nomination of David Turk to be the Deputy Secretary of Energy. If confirmed, Turk, who most recently served as Deputy Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, would support the work of Secretary Granholm.
