RF_indoor_tour_2021.jpgOn August 31 and September 1, the APGA Research Foundation (RF) and Gas Technology Institute (GTI) held the RF/GTI Research Forum in Des Plaines, Ill., at the GTI headquarters. GTI staff presented the latest updates on research, development, and commercialization projects that have been partially funded by the RF. Attendees were then able to tour the laboratories and see many of the projects firsthand. The RF contributes to GTI Operations Technology Development (OTD), Emerging Technology Program (ETP), and Utilization Technology Development (UTD).

On the first day, GTI staff discussed OTD projects and priorities. Attendees were able to see new sensors used to locate untraceable plastic pipe and specialized autonomous robotics that navigate complex pipe systems to detect anomalies and features. Wi-Fi connected smart valves and monitors are being tested that automatically shut and alert the gas distribution system when an abnormal release of gas is detected. A vacuum containment system is in development that helps mitigate the release of methane to the atmosphere when purging.

RF_outdoor_tour_2021.jpgOn the second day, the conversation shifted to UTD. Research and development of residential and commercial end-use natural gas appliances such as gas heat pumps for space and water heating, combined heat and power (CHP) units, and micro and nano energy grids are ensuring that gas appliances will continue to be an efficient option for consumers. Along with next generation appliances, GTI is playing a large role in testing renewable natural gas (RNG) and hydrogen blended natural gas to determine what chemical components are included, how to clean the gas, and what long-term effects they have on infrastructure. RNG and hydrogen blended natural gas along with next-gen appliances will work together to make natural gas an ultra-efficient option for consumers.

GTI research is increasing safety for gas employees, affordability for customers, and leading the effort to reduce carbon across the natural gas industry.
