Energy Permitting Reform at the Forefront of Discussions in DC

By Joshua St.Pierre posted 05-11-2023 11:44 AM

This week, the Biden Administration released its set of 11 priorities for the energy permitting reform debate, signaling the acknowledgment that changes are needed to achieve the President’s energy policies. John Podesta, White House advisor, made the announcement at the Bipartisan Policy Center on Wednesday with APGA representatives in attendance. In his remarks, Podesta also announced the Administration’s support for legislation introduced by Senator Manchin (D-WV) adding, “The president doesn’t love everything in the bill, but we support it because that’s what compromise means and it will take compromise on everyone’s part to get this done.”

This announcement comes on the heels of a scheduled hearing of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee where senators plan to specifically discuss this issue and the multiple bills that have been introduced. To date, four bills addressing permitting reform have already been introduced in Congress and another bill from Senator Carper (D-DE) is set to be introduced in the coming weeks.

APGA is working to ensure that natural gas infrastructure is part of the discussion. We are engaging with the Process Gas Consumers Group (PGC) and the Industrial Energy Consumers of America (IECA), and we plan to share our aligned priorities with legislators very soon. Guaranteeing affordable energy rates for customers and establishing sensible, “all of the above” energy policies is critical for APGA members and must be included in prospective reform language.
