TITLE: Cathodic Protection (CP)/Leak Survey Technician
DEPARTMENT: Gas System, City of Cartersville
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for performing duties associated with the installation, maintenance, inspection and repair of cathodic protection facilities and performing duties associated with leak surveying.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Responsible for performing required inspections and readings such as test stations, isolated services, casings, bonds, foreign crossings, bridge crossings and regulating station bonds.
- Responsible for the inspection of test station, bond station, insulation and casing installations.
- Responsible for alternating current (AC) monitoring and mitigation.
- Responsible for timely cathodic protection troubleshooting and repair.
- Responsible for timely preparation of repair and investigation work orders.
- Responsible for monitoring, troubleshooting and maintenance of rectifiers.
- Assists construction crews in clearing electrical shorts within the gas system
- Supervises the calibration of half-cells in accordance with procedures.
- Responsible for design and inspection of cathodic protection systems.
- Assists with the installation of flange or pipe insulators to isolate sections of pipe.
- Monitors corrosion control records to ensure compliance.
- Provides relevant support and inspection for cathodic protection needs on engineering and construction projects.
- Provides corrosion control-related support to Integrity Management Departments as needed.
- Generates and prepares reports as required.
- Accurately enters compliance records into the appropriate system of record in a timely fashion.
- Participates in regulatory audits as needed.
- Performs walking leak survey and maintains all records of completed surveys as needed.
- Checks for leaks in pipes and meters and responds to customer calls.
- Utilizes a combustible gas indicator (CGI) to detect gas or other pertinent instruments.
- Supervises the maintenance and calibration of combustible gas indicator (CGI) to detect gas or other pertinent instruments.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
- Knowledge of City policies and Federal and State codes pertaining to the installation, maintenance, inspection and repair of cathodic protection facilities and leak surveying.
- Specific knowledge and understanding of corrosion and cathodic protection impressed current rectifier and anode systems.
- Skills and knowledge in general natural gas plumbing and piping practices.
- Specific knowledge and understanding of regulating station piping, regulators and relief valves.
- Specific knowledge and understanding of metering station piping and meters.
- Skill in locating and repairing gas leaks.
- Skill in reading gas meters.
- Skill in locating key valves and mains.
- Skill in using specialized equipment, including a current mapping instrument, short or holiday detector, pipe horn, flame pack, CGI, hydraulic pipe pincher, measuring wheel and heat fusion tools.
- Skill in using Microsoft Office applications.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Skill in organization and time management.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Regulatory and Compliance Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines consists of Federal and State regulations and City and departmental policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties in natural gas facility maintenance and repair. The proximity to potentially explosive gases contributes to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to repair and service natural gas facilities. Successful performance helps ensure the safe and efficient operation of the gas system.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other utility workers, other City employees, and the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee must frequently lift light objects, occasionally lift heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and be able to distinguish between shades of color.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, inclement weather, and gas leaks. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 6 months of cathodic protection related work experience
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain an AMPP Cathodic Protection Tester (CP1) Certification (NACE) or higher.
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with having had similar positions for two to three years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated with a Motor Vehicle Department Driver’s record meeting the guidelines of the City’s Vehicle Use Policy.
