API Publishes Third Edition of RP 1162: Public Awareness Programs

The American Petroleum Institute (APIU) has published the Third Edition of Recommended Practice (RP) 1162, Public Awareness Programs for Pipeline Operators and it is available for purchase on API’s website. APGA was fully involved in the revision process and actively participated in the drafting of the RP. API is also developing a webpage dedicated to providing guidance for the new version, which will be shared once it is available.

Changes in this edition include allowance for mass media communications for baseline messages and collaborative approaches for message delivery and effectiveness measurement.

At this time, the Third Edition is only an RP for industry to consider. In order for it to become the new regulatory requirement, PHMSA will have to go through a formal rulemaking process. It is unknown when or even if, PHMSA plans to do this. APGA will continue to collaborate with the other industry trade associations to ensure PHMSA understands the widespread support for this new RP.
