APGA Asks Congress to Extend Alternative Fuels Tax Credit

By Emily Wong posted 03-17-2022 12:21 PM

This week, APGA and several of its member systems signed a letter organized by NGVAmerica asking Congress to extend the alternative fuels tax credit (AFTC). Approximately 400 companies and organizations signed the letter, which was sent to leadership of the House and Senate tax writing committees.

The AFTC is a credit of $0.50 per gasoline gallon equivalent of certain transportation fuels, including natural gas and renewable natural gas. The credit expired at the end of 2021. A five-year extension of the current tax credit was included in the House-passed Build Back Better Act, but the legislation remains stalled in the Senate.

The letter emphasizes the emissions reduction benefits of using alternative fuels for transportation and urges Congress to renew the credit to continue to incentivize expanded use. This tax credit is critically important for APGA members who use natural gas vehicles in their fleets or operate compressed natural gas fueling stations.

APGA has been a strong supporter of the AFTC and will continue to engage in all efforts to see it extended.
