On January 26, APGA Vice President of Operations and Safety, Erin Kurilla, spoke at the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Project’s Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) meeting on their Raid Encapsulation of Pipelines Avoiding Intensive Replacement (REPAIR) program. This multi-year project “seeks to reduce natural gas leaks from these pipes by developing a suite of technologies to enable the automated construction of new pipe inside existing pipe.” The most commonly known technology meeting this charge is cast iron liners.

Erin shared with the research community in attendance APGA members' progress with cast iron replacement programs and provided them with an overview of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s (PHMSA) Natural Gas Distribution Infrastructure and Safety Modernization (NGDISM) Grant Program. She also discussed the potential for public and community owned gas systems to apply for a grant to utilize these technologies.
