Member System Profiles: Memphis Light, Gas, and Water Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW)
hosted APGA Vice President for Regulatory Affairs Laura Schepis
for a half-day visit on Friday, January 28, 2005. During her visit,
Laura met several staff including Alonzo Weaver, Vice President
of Customer Service and Operations, Leonard Phillips, Manager
of Gas Operations and Laura Campbell, Assistant Manager for
Energy Resources.
After a lunch meeting spent discussing current issues such as LIHEAP, the pending Congressional energy bill and methods for increasing domestic supply, Laura toured MLGW Systems Operation headquarters located just outside downtown Memphis. There, operators monitor all three utility services from one control room. Systems Operation Manager Lee Smart and several MLGW staff persons gave Laura an excellent overview of the delicate balance of technology and human resources required to ensure quality customer service. Gas heat is widely used in Memphis and its surrounding municipalities. MLGW serves approximately 310,000 residential gas customers in Shelby County with a geographical service area of over 750 square miles. Many of the in-town and midtown neighborhoods are several decades old, but the eastern end of the county is experiencing suburban growth. With proximity to the Gulf, MLGW is able to take service from competing pipelines; ANR is a recent addition to their transportation portfolio. In the next few years, MLGW expects to receive increasing amounts of LNG gas and is on guard against potential domestic gas quality problems. APGA is committed to staying in touch with members and site visits are an important component of this strategic objective. APGA’s work on your behalf in Washington, D.C. is more effective when staff members are able to learn, on a first-hand basis, about the special issues facing public gas systems. APGA thanks MLGW for their hospitality during Laura’s visit! Originally in February 15, 2005 Public Gas News |
